Enugu Police stolen vehicles recovery leads to arrest of four suspects and seizure of cars linked to robbery and a 2022 kidnapping case

The Enugu State Police Command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Mamman Giwa, has detained four suspected criminal elements and recovered three stolen vehicles, including one connected to a 2022 kidnapping incident in neighbouring Anambra State.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Saturday in Enugu, attributing the breakthrough to coordinated intelligence-driven operations carried out by different tactical units of the command.

According to Superintendent Ndukwe, operatives attached to the Central Police Station, working alongside members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group, arrested 22-year-old Joseph Nsor at about 5:30 a.m. on February 26 at Chris Chemist Roundabout in Enugu.

The suspect, who reportedly arrived in the state without a verifiable address, was intercepted while attempting to flee with a stolen Toyota Hiace bus allegedly accessed using a master key.

Police authorities confirmed that the vehicle was successfully recovered and returned to its owner, while Joseph Nsor was arraigned before a court on February 27 and remanded at the Enugu Correctional Centre.

In a separate operation conducted on January 31, operatives of the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad apprehended Ugwuanyi Samuel, popularly known as “Sammyblack”, identified as a member of the Supreme Vikings Confraternity.

Superintendent Ndukwe stated that Ugwuanyi Samuel was found in possession of a red Toyota Camry bearing a National Association of Nigerian Students plate number.

Investigations later revealed that the vehicle belonged to a female resident of Ogbunike in Anambra State and had been forcefully taken in June 2022 after her son was abducted at gunpoint while driving.

Police investigations indicated that the victim was released after a ransom payment of N500,000, while the vehicle was allegedly repainted to conceal its identity. The recovery marks a significant breakthrough in a long-running criminal case.

Earlier, on January 24, operatives acting on credible intelligence raided the New Garriki area of Awkunanaw in Enugu, leading to the arrest of Chinonso John, aged 27, and Samuel Nwankwor, aged 41, described by police as an ex-convict.

A red Toyota Matrix with registration number AAH 785 AE was recovered during the operation.

The suspects reportedly confessed to snatching the vehicle at gunpoint in Awka, Anambra State, on January 23, alongside involvement in other vehicle theft operations involving a Lexus RX 350 and a Toyota Highlander.

Superintendent Ndukwe confirmed that investigations were ongoing to track down additional accomplices, while the remaining suspects and recovered exhibits would be transferred to the Anambra State Police Command for further investigation and prosecution.

Commissioner of Police Mamman Giwa reaffirmed the command’s resolve to sustain aggressive crime-fighting operations across the state.

Mamman Giwa also urged residents to support security agencies with credible intelligence and adopt stronger vehicle security measures to deter criminal activity.
