FEC approves N213.7bn power projects to electrify universities, hospitals, and rural areas with solar systems, boosting healthcare, education, and agriculture

FEC approves N213.7bn power projects to revolutionize energy access in Nigeria’s educational and rural sectors, marking a significant stride in national development.

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, announced the approval after the 7th Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu.

The first project, worth ₦145 billion (inclusive of VAT), will fund the Energising Education Programme (EEP).

This initiative, managed by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), targets universities and teaching hospitals plagued by power shortages.

“The absence of reliable power in most institutions has grown into a crisis,” Adelabu said. “This initiative will bring relief and enhance education and healthcare.”

Eight institutions will benefit from this phase:

• University of Lagos
•  Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria
• Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife
• University of Nigeria, Nsukka
• University of Ibadan
• University College Hospital, Ibadan
• Federal University, Dutse
• Federal University, Wukari

Previous EEP phases already delivered solar power to several schools including University of Abuja (3MW), University of Maiduguri (12MW), and University of Calabar (8MW).

The second project, valued at ₦68.7 billion, will deploy solar-powered systems to agricultural centers and off-grid rural communities.

This will energize rural homes and enable agro-processing and other productive uses, helping transform local economies.

“It’s a key part of our resolve to ensure no Nigerian is left behind,” Adelabu said.

Both projects reflect the administration’s focus on inclusive growth, improved service delivery, and sustainable infrastructure.
