Fernandes hat-trick inspires United’s 5-2 Ipswich rout as Bruno Fernandes leads a comeback at Old Trafford after falling a goal behind

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick as Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick’s team recovered from a goal down to beat Ipswich Town, led by head coach Gary O’Neil, 5-2 at Old Trafford on Sunday 30 August 2026.

The 31-year-old Portuguese midfielder levelled before half-time, converted a penalty and finished from close range before setting up Bryan Mbeumo. A crowd of 74,148 watched United claim a first Premier League win of the season after last weekend’s 2-0 defeat at Hull City.

Ipswich left-back Leif Davis had given the visitors a 29th-minute lead, sweeping high into the net after Abdul Fatawu beat Luke Shaw down the right.

Goalkeeper Senne Lammens had already denied Julio Enciso in a one-on-one, and Davis himself was later denied when through. For a time another newly promoted side looked capable of exposing the same defensive uncertainty that cost United at Hull.

The contest turned on a slip. Marcelino Núñez lost his footing, Matheus Cunha seized the ball and found Fernandes, who drove a thunderous left-foot shot past Kjell Scherpen in the 40th minute. It was the first of three goals that transformed an anxious afternoon into a comfortable one.

Early in the second half Harry Maguire’s shot struck his own arm before looping off target and deflecting in off Jacob Greaves. Referee Craig Pawson and VAR allowed the own goal because the original effort was not heading into the net.

Greaves then brought down Cunha as the Brazilian ran through. Fernandes, who had missed two penalties in pre-season, sent Scherpen the wrong way from the spot in the 61st minute.

Seven minutes later the captain completed the treble, reacting first after a Mbeumo effort was deflected into his path. Fernandes then clipped a pass over the top for Mbeumo to loft the ball over Scherpen for 5-1.

Chuba Akpom tapped in a stoppage-time consolation after Lisandro Martínez was caught in possession, a reminder that questions about United’s defending have not vanished.

The display carried extra weight because Fernandes had been named PFA Players’ Player of the Year only days earlier, an award built largely on a record 21 Premier League assists last season when he scored nine times.

This was his first league hat-trick in five years and United’s first five-goal Premier League haul since August 2021.

Marcus Rashford, 28, made his first league start for the club since December 2024 after loan spells away from Old Trafford. Kobbie Mainoo also returned to the midfield.

Carrick made four changes from the Hull defeat and later described Rashford’s presence as feeling “like a new signing.” Mainoo, the manager said, “underpinned the performance.”

“It was massive,” Fernandes said afterwards. “We lost three points last week, so it was all about getting the three points, giving a good performance to our fans. Scoring goals is the best feeling in football and then doing a hat-trick in a game at home with our fans is something amazing that I am very proud of. But the main thing is that I need to score goals to help the team to win games.”

Carrick focused on character rather than individual brilliance. “We spoke about dealing with setbacks if you want to be a successful team,” the head coach said.

“We took a mini setback going a goal behind. The stubbornness, belief, confidence and togetherness the boys showed at that stage was really pleasing. The way they bounced back, that’s probably the biggest thing to take. That mentality was what we really relied on today.”

O’Neil accepted the result while pointing to two unlucky moments that turned 1-0 into 2-1. “Really unlucky to be 2-1 down, two of the most unlucky goals you will see, but then not good enough to get back into it,” the Ipswich manager said. “We got punished by a very good side. To beat Manchester United at Old Trafford you need the moments to go in your favour and they didn’t.” He added that his players “gave absolutely everything” and that the club still had three points from two difficult opening fixtures.

United sit on three points from two matches, level with Ipswich on points but ahead on goal difference. Carrick’s side have now won nine of ten Premier League home games in the 2026 calendar year.

The victory eases immediate pressure after the opening-day loss, yet the late gift to Akpom and Shaw’s difficulty against Fatawu show the work still required at the back.

Fernandes has already matched a third of last season’s modest goal tally in two games. For a captain who has carried United through several turbulent campaigns, the afternoon was both a personal statement and a collective reset.
