Former AC Milan captain and Italy defender Franco Baresi has died at the age of 66, bringing to an end the life of one of football’s greatest defenders and a player whose influence shaped an era for both club and country. AC Milan confirmed the death on Friday after reports emerged earlier in the day.

Tributes poured in from across the football world as players, clubs and supporters remembered Franco Baresi for his exceptional leadership, tactical intelligence and unwavering loyalty to AC Milan, where he spent his entire professional career.

Franco Baresi made more than 700 appearances for AC Milan between 1977 and 1997, winning six Serie A titles, three European Cups, four Italian Super Cups and two Intercontinental Cups.

His iconic No. 6 shirt was retired by the club following his retirement, a rare honour that reflected his remarkable contribution to Milan’s history.

On the international stage, Baresi earned 81 caps for Italy and was a member of the squad that won the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain.

Twelve years later, he captained the Azzurri to the 1994 World Cup final in the United States, returning from knee surgery in time to lead Italy against Brazil before the team narrowly lost on penalties.

AC Milan described Baresi as a symbol of the club’s identity and legacy, with condolences also arriving from rival clubs, former teammates and football governing bodies.

Franco Baresi had faced health challenges over the past year after undergoing surgery to remove a pulmonary nodule and receiving further treatment.

Earlier this week, AC Milan dismissed false reports of his death while confirming that the former captain was seriously ill. Friday’s announcement confirmed that the football icon had passed away.

Widely regarded as one of the finest defenders in football history, Franco Baresi helped redefine the role of the modern sweeper through his reading of the game, composure and leadership.
