Fulham Calvin Bassey contract talks are expected as the defender attracts Inter Milan interest, with the club holding an option until 2028

Fulham, London, September 9, 2026: Fulham are preparing to open talks with Nigeria international defender Calvin Bassey over a new long-term contract as Inter Milan continues to monitor the 26-year-old centre-back.

Bassey joined Fulham from Ajax in July 2023 and has since developed into an important member of the first-team squad. Fulham’s official records confirm that his current contract runs until the summer of 2027, with the club holding an option to extend the agreement by another 12 months.

That option gives Fulham considerable leverage. Even though Bassey would enter the final year of his current deal next summer, the club can potentially retain him until 2028 without needing to reach an immediate agreement on fresh terms.

Fulham are nevertheless keen to reward Bassey with a longer commitment, according to TEAMtalk, with discussions expected to begin despite the club’s relatively relaxed position over his future.

The situation has attracted interest from Inter Milan, who have reportedly monitored Bassey over several transfer windows. His experience in the Premier League, left-footed ability and versatility between centre-back and left-back have contributed to his appeal.

Bassey’s development at Craven Cottage has been significant. He has established himself as one of Fulham’s dependable defensive options since arriving from Ajax, while his ability to recover quickly and operate in more than one defensive position has added to his value.

His performances were particularly recognised during the 2024/25 campaign, when Bassey was named Fulham’s Player of the Season. He has also remained part of the first-team picture following Álvaro Arbeloa’s arrival as head coach.

The defender is understood to be settled in West London and open to extending his stay, provided suitable terms can be agreed. That gives Fulham an encouraging starting point as the club seeks to prevent interest from abroad developing into a serious transfer threat.

The club’s preference for continuity is also understandable given Bassey’s growing importance. Allowing a regular defender to approach the final stages of his contract could invite greater competition from clubs with the financial strength to make an attractive offer.

Inter’s interest therefore provides an additional incentive for Fulham to clarify Bassey’s future, even if the existing extension clause means the London club are not under immediate pressure.

Bassey’s journey to Fulham has itself been eventful. Born in Italy and raised in London, he developed in Leicester City’s academy before moving to Rangers in 2020. His performances in Scotland earned him a move to Ajax before Fulham brought him back to England.

At international level, Bassey has become an established member of Nigeria’s Super Eagles setup, adding international experience to his Premier League background.

For Fulham, retaining that combination could prove valuable as Arbeloa shapes his squad. The club’s reported desire for a new agreement suggests Bassey’s role extends beyond simply filling a position in defence.

The timing is also notable because Fulham have endured a difficult opening to the season. TEAMtalk currently lists the club 19th in the Premier League, making stability within the squad particularly important as the campaign develops.

For now, there is no indication that an agreement has been reached. Fulham’s existing option provides protection, while Bassey’s reported willingness to remain offers the club a positive platform for negotiations.

The coming discussions could therefore determine whether Bassey’s next chapter remains at Craven Cottage or whether Inter’s longstanding interest eventually develops into a formal pursuit.
