Gbenga Ogunbote Plateau United Pitch concerns grow as the coach blames poor playing conditions for defeat to Rivers United

Plateau United head coach Gbenga Ogunbote has blamed the poor condition of the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium pitch for his team’s defeat to Rivers United in a Nigeria Premier Football League clash on Sunday.

Gbenga Ogunbote said the playing surface significantly affected his side’s performance, adding that the match became more physical than technical due to the difficult conditions.

Plateau United lost 1-0 to Rivers United, with the hosts securing a hard-fought victory that saw them reclaim the top spot on the league table, while the Jos-based side remain in the middle of the standings as they continue their fight to avoid relegation pressure.

Gbenga admitted that his team also suffered from lapses in concentration, stating that Plateau United paid for moments of carelessness during the game.

He noted that the only goal of the match came from a key opportunity that his side failed to defend properly, describing the defeat as unfortunate rather than a complete reflection of performance.

Gbenga Ogunbote further argued that adverse weather conditions, including heavy rainfall, disrupted his team’s playing style, particularly in the first half when ball control became difficult.

According to him, the second half showed improvement as Plateau United were able to play more structured football when conditions slightly improved.

The coach also urged the Nigeria Premier Football League, Nigeria Premier Football League, to ensure that only stadiums with quality playing surfaces are approved for top-flight matches, stressing that poor pitches undermine the league’s reputation.

Looking ahead, Gbenga Ogunbote said Plateau United must quickly regroup as they prepare for their next fixture against Kun Khalifat FC, with only four games remaining in the season.

He emphasised that every remaining match is crucial as the team aims to return to winning ways and secure a stronger position on the league table before the end of the campaign.
