FRSC confirms a tragic Gombe road accident that killed nine people on the Kaltungo–Cham Road, blaming speeding and brake failure

The Federal Road Safety Corps has confirmed that nine people were killed in a tragic road accident on Monday along the Kaltungo–Cham Road in Kaluwa community, Kaltungo Local Government Area of Gombe State.

The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Gombe State, Samson Kaura, disclosed the details in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Gombe, saying the crash occurred at about 8.33 a.m.

Samson Kaura said a total of 18 people were involved in the Gombe road accident, with five sustaining varying degrees of injuries, while four others escaped unhurt.

The sector commander explained that the injured victims were rushed to the General Hospital in Kaltungo for medical treatment, while the bodies of those who died were deposited at the hospital’s mortuary.

Preliminary investigations by the corps indicated that the crash was caused by loss of control resulting from excessive speed and brake failure.

According to Samson Kaura, the accident involved a trailer and a Sharon bus travelling on the same route.

The sector commander said the trailer, which was reportedly speeding on a sloping section of the road, lost control and rammed into the Sharon bus from behind, forcing the bus to somersault.

He described the incident as avoidable and warned motorists against excessive speed, particularly on roads with challenging terrain.

Samson Kaura stressed that drivers must maintain a controllable speed at all times to prevent needless loss of lives and property, noting that the consequences of reckless driving are often devastating.

He also urged motorists to conduct routine vehicle checks before embarking on any journey, especially during the busy yuletide period when traffic volume increases significantly.

The Federal Road Safety Corps reiterated its commitment to road safety enforcement and appealed to drivers to cooperate with traffic regulations to reduce the rising incidence of fatal crashes across the country.
