Guillermo Hoyos Inter Miami coach appointment confirmed as Messi’s former mentor replaces Javier Mascherano at MLS side

Inter Miami CF have appointed Guillermo Hoyos as their new head coach, with the former sporting director stepping in following the departure of Javier Mascherano.

The appointment was confirmed on Wednesday, marking a swift managerial change at the MLS club after Mascherano left for personal reasons just months after leading the team to its first MLS Cup title.

Hoyos, 62, has a long-standing relationship with Lionel Messi, having previously mentored the World Cup winner during their time together at Barcelona’s youth system more than two decades ago.

Speaking at his unveiling, Hoyos emphasised that friendship would not compromise professionalism in his new role.

He said their personal bond was strong but stressed that it would not interfere with the demands of daily training or team discipline.

The Argentine coach previously served as Inter Miami’s sporting director before his promotion to head coach duties.

Club sources indicate Hoyos is expected to remain in charge only until mid-year, with a more permanent coaching structure planned ahead of the Leagues Cup in August.

Inter Miami currently sit third in the MLS Eastern Conference after seven matches, maintaining strong early-season form.

Messi remains the club’s central figure, following his 2022 FIFA World Cup triumph and decorated career that includes eight Ballon d’Or awards.
