Haaland inspires Norway World Cup win over Iraq with a brace in a 4-1 victory as Norway top Group I

Norway national team forward Erling Haaland delivered a powerful performance as Norway defeated Iraq 4-1 in their opening FIFA World Cup 2026 group match at Boston Stadium.

Haaland scored twice in a dominant display, marking his first World Cup goals and leading Norway to a strong start in Group I.

The Manchester City striker opened the scoring in the 29th minute, finishing from close range after a well-worked move. Iraq responded through Aymen Hussein, who levelled with a well-taken header.

Norway regained control before half-time when Haaland capitalised on a defensive error to restore the lead, taking his international tally to an impressive 57 goals in 51 appearances.

Defender Leo Østigård added a third goal from a set-piece after coming off the bench, before Norway sealed a convincing win with a late own goal from Iraq’s Hussein.

The result placed the Norway national football team top of Group I on goal difference, level on points with France after their earlier 3-1 win over Senegal.

Iraq showed moments of resistance despite the defeat, with several attacking spells that tested Norway’s defence, but costly errors ultimately proved decisive.
