Haaland scores as Manchester City beat Villarreal 2-0, keeping unbeaten Champions League run alive with goals from Haaland and Bernardo Silva

Haaland Manchester City Champions League continued his extraordinary goalscoring run as the English champions secured a comfortable 2-0 victory at Villarreal on Tuesday.

Pep Guardiola’s side maintained their unbeaten record in the Champions League group stage thanks to first-half strikes from Erling Haaland and Bernardo Silva at the Estadio de la Ceramica.

The Norwegian striker has now scored in 12 consecutive matches for club and country, amassing 22 goals in that period — a remarkable feat that cements his reputation as one of Europe’s most lethal forwards.

Manchester City made four changes from their recent Premier League win over Everton, with Phil Foden among those rested, as they ended a year-long drought without an away win in European competition.

City asserted control early, with Haaland narrowly missing a headed chance from a Silva cross before the opener arrived in the 17th minute.

Rico Lewis, impressively involved in the build-up, cut back a neat pass for Haaland to fire home from close range.

Villarreal, sitting third in La Liga, began to find some rhythm but City struck again before half-time.

Savinho’s precise cross found the unmarked Bernardo Silva, who nodded past goalkeeper Luiz Junior to effectively seal the victory.

The hosts suffered a blow when midfielder Nico Gonzalez was forced off injured before the hour mark, compounding the absence of key player Rodri Hernandez for City.

The second half saw Villarreal pushing to find a way back into the game, with Gianluigi Donnarumma making key saves to deny Nicola Pepe’s shots.

Pepe came close again with a header and volley, but City’s defence held firm.

Haaland tested the Villarreal keeper on several occasions, though Luiz Junior’s saves limited the striker to just one goal — a testament to the goalkeeper’s impressive performance.

Near the end, Guardiola introduced Omar Marmoush for his first appearance since August following a knee injury.

Villarreal nearly grabbed a consolation when Renato Veiga’s header rattled the post, but Donnarumma remained unbeaten.

Villarreal remain without a win in Europe this season, collecting just one point from their first three group games.
