Nigeria U-17 Flamingos seek redemption against France after opening defeat, aiming to revive their campaign at FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup

Nigeria U-17 Flamingos face a crucial test as they prepare to play France in their second Group D match at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

Following a heavy 4–1 defeat to Canada in their opener, the Flamingos are eager to turn their fortunes around.

The team’s defensive errors in Salé proved costly, though Queen Joseph’s goal offered a glimmer of hope.

Now, bottom of the group with zero points and a negative goal difference, a win against France tonight at 8pm Nigerian time is essential to keep their tournament hopes alive.

This encounter carries added weight, recalling a tense meeting 13 years ago in Azerbaijan where Nigeria and France drew 0-0 before France triumphed on penalties in the quarter-finals.

France arrive on the back of a strong 4–2 victory over Samoa, known for their fluid attacking style and tactical discipline.

The Flamingos, under coach Bankole Olowookere, must strike a balance between shoring up their defence and sharpening their attacking play.

Captain Shakirat Moshood expressed the team’s renewed determination ahead of the clash. “We are not happy about our first game, but for the second match against France, we are going to win because we are ready for them,” she said. “We have been working very hard for this second match. I know we are going to win by the grace of God.”

Moshood also addressed the disappointment of Nigerian fans, offering an apology and a firm promise: “First, I want to say we are sorry for the first game. We promise that in the next match, we are going to do better. We will make Nigerians proud and happy.”

Coach Olowookere has focused training sessions on correcting defensive lapses, with drills to improve defensive organisation and game management.

The team’s morale was boosted through motivational talks and messages from senior Super Falcons stars such as Asisat Oshoala and Chiamaka Nnadozie.
