The 31-year-old Super Falcons forward announced her decision in an emotional Instagram post on Saturday, expressing deep gratitude for a career that took her across continents and into football history.

“It is with a heart full of gratitude that I bid farewell to my playing career on the pitch,” Onumonu wrote, reflecting on a path that began when she was just eight years old.

Born in California to a Nigerian father, she fell in love with the sport while playing for a youth team called Magic.

“All I wanted to do was run as fast as I could and score. I didn’t much care about winning or losing; I just loved playing,” she recalled, echoing the pure joy that fuelled her rise in the game.

From those early beginnings, Onumonu went on to establish herself as one of the most dependable strikers in women’s football.

Her professional career saw her represent several top-flight clubs in the United States Boston Breakers, Portland Thorns, Reign FC, Utah Royals, and Gotham FC before moving to Montpellier in France.

A graduate of the California Golden Bears, Onumonu first represented the United States at the U-23 level before embracing her Nigerian heritage and switching allegiance to the Super Falcons in 2021.

Her international career flourished soon after, featuring at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, and the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, where Nigeria captured their record 10th continental title.

“I had the profound pleasure of lifting an NWSL championship trophy, representing Nigeria at the Olympics and a World Cup, and helping to lift the African Cup of Nations trophy with the Super Falcons for a historic 10th time,” she said proudly.

Though she played just 54 minutes during WAFCON 2025, appearing in Nigeria’s goalless draw with Algeria, Onumonu remained a vital presence in the squad, offering leadership and experience alongside stalwarts Tochukwu Oluehi, Osinachi Ohale, and Francisca Ordega.

Importantly, the Ifeoma Onumonu retirement announcement does not mark a complete exit from football. The forward hinted at new beginnings beyond the pitch, writing:

“This is not a goodbye to football, but a new beginning. I am excited to explore opportunities off the pitch, using the skills and lessons learned from my time on it.”

She expressed heartfelt appreciation to all who supported her along the way, saying, “Thank you to all the staff, teammates, coaches, doctors, fans, and my incredible friends and family for your unwavering support through the years.

Although my time as a player has come to an end, my love and devotion for this game will never waver.”

Titled ‘Forever in Our Hearts’, the biography was written by Portuguese author and former professional footballer José Delgado and published by Reach Sport. Liverpool announced the release on Thursday, October 22, 2026, through a post on the club’s official X account.

The book traces Jota’s journey from his early years in Portugal to his rise as one of his generation’s respected forwards and a much-loved member of the Liverpool football family.

Drawing on interviews with family members, friends, teammates and coaches, the biography offers a personal account of the footballer’s character, professional achievements and relationships beyond the pitch.

Contributors include Jota’s wife, Rute, his parents, Isabel and Joaquim, and former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp, alongside more than 90 other people who knew him throughout his life and career.

Their recollections highlight Jota’s determination, humility and commitment to football, while exploring the personal qualities that earned him affection among teammates, supporters and colleagues.

The biography also celebrates the close bond between Jota and his brother, André Silva, reflecting on the impact both men had on those around them and the wider football community.

Jota enjoyed significant success during his career, winning the Premier League with Liverpool and the UEFA Nations League with Portugal.

His performances, work ethic and contribution to the teams he represented helped establish his reputation in European football.

However, ‘Forever in Our Hearts’ also confronts the tragedy of July 2025, when Jota and André died, leaving family members, friends, teammates and supporters mourning their loss.

Delgado said the project began as an effort to preserve Jota’s memory during a period of profound sadness, with a commitment to presenting an honest and respectful account of the lives of both brothers.

“My commitment throughout was to tell his story with care, honesty and respect for Diogo, André, and the family and friends who loved them,” Delgado said.

The author added that the willingness of those closest to the brothers to share their memories had helped capture their personalities and the depth of affection they inspired.

Reflecting on Jota’s relationship with Liverpool, Delgado said the accounts gathered during his research revealed qualities extending beyond his footballing ability, including humility, dedication and personal character.

He expressed hope that the biography would provide a lasting tribute while inspiring future generations of footballers.

The book is available through official Liverpool FC stores and online, with proceeds directed towards the grassroots football programme being developed in Jota’s name through the LFC Foundation.

The release forms part of Liverpool’s continuing efforts to honour the forward and his brother. Earlier in 2026, the club unveiled a permanent memorial outside Anfield, giving supporters a dedicated place to remember the brothers and reflect on their legacy.
