Ikota River demolition by Lagos authorities targets illegal buildings blocking drainage, aiming to prevent perennial flooding in Lekki and Eti-Osa areas

Ikota River demolition by Lagos State authorities has led to the removal of several illegal buildings, including duplexes, obstructing natural drainage channels in the Eti-Osa Local Government Area.

The operation, carried out by the Drainage Enforcement and Compliance Department, aims to prevent the persistent flooding that affects the Lekki and Ikota axis, especially following heavy rains.

Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the enforcement action, explaining it targeted structures blocking stormwater flow along the Ikota River.

The demolitions intensified on September 30, affecting properties worth millions of naira that violated urban planning laws and failed to regularise their building permits within the granted amnesty period.

Residents shared videos of the demolitions on social media, some expressing frustration at what they described as insufficient prior notice and transparency in building approvals.

However, authorities maintain that due process was followed and warn that illegal structures obstructing waterways will continue to be removed to protect lives and property.

The demolition follows a broader crackdown by the Lagos State Building Control Agency, which began enforcing compliance after an amnesty period ended on December 31, 2024.

The amnesty was designed to give property owners a final chance to legalise their buildings but has now expired.
