INEC deadline extension gives parties until May 10 to submit registers ahead of 2027 elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission on Friday announced an extension of the deadline for political parties to submit their membership registers for the 2027 general election, shifting the date from April 21 to May 10.

The decision was disclosed in Abuja by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, following consultations with political parties earlier in the week.

Haruna said the adjustment was made after parties raised concerns over the timeline outlined in the revised electoral schedule.

He explained that the extension aligns with the provisions of Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act, 2026, which requires submission at least 21 days before party primaries.

Under the new arrangement, political parties are permitted to fix their primaries within the approved window of April 23 to May 30, provided they comply with the stipulated timeline.

“The register of party members must be submitted to INEC not later than 21 days before the holding of their respective primaries,” Haruna said, stressing the importance of adherence to ensure a smooth electoral process.

The INEC deadline extension effectively gives parties additional time to finalise and submit their membership records, a critical requirement in the lead-up to candidate selection for the 2027 polls.

Haruna noted that the revised dates were agreed upon in consultation with political parties, reflecting a collaborative effort to maintain order and transparency in the electoral process.
