Israeli support for Christian protection in Nigeria will rely on intelligence sharing and cooperation with the Nigerian government, Ambassador Michael Freeman says

Abuja, January 6, 2026. The Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, Michael Freeman, on Monday clarified that Israeli support for Christian protection in Nigeria woul be pursued strictly through intelligence sharing and cooperation with the Nigerian government, not unilateral action.

Michael Freeman spoke during an interview on ARISE News while addressing international reactions to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s recent statement on opening a new front against radical Islamist violence targeting persecuted communities.

The ambassador stressed that Israel’s position respects Nigeria’s sovereignty and recognises the authority of the Federal Government in addressing insecurity across the country.

Michael Freeman said the initiative was designed to support persecuted groups globally, including Christians, while working in partnership with host governments.

He explained that cooperation would centre on intelligence sharing aimed at curbing violence affecting Nigerians of all faiths.

Michael Freeman said Israel’s interest was not limited to Christians alone, but extended to Muslims and other communities impacted by insecurity nationwide.

The ambassador noted that any collaboration would be guided entirely by the Nigerian government, describing the relationship as one between allies working toward shared security goals.

When asked whether formal diplomatic engagement had begun with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration following the Prime Minister’s remarks, Michael Freeman declined to provide operational details.

He said discussions involving intelligence could not be conducted in public without undermining their effectiveness.

Michael Freeman also dismissed claims that Israel’s proposal was motivated by geopolitical ambition, pointing to Israel’s record of religious freedom at home.

He said Israel remained the only country in the Middle East where the Christian population was growing and practising freely.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently announced the initiative during remarks in Florida after meetings with United States President Donald Trump and senior officials, where regional and global security challenges were discussed.

Israel’s comments followed reports of United States airstrikes against terrorist targets in northwest Nigeria on Christmas Day, linked to Washington’s stated commitment to counter religiously motivated violence.
