Joe Cole says Portugal have the best midfield at the World Cup, backing them over Spain and questioning Luis de la Fuente’s side

Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole has tipped Portugal as the nation with the strongest midfield heading into the World Cup, while expressing doubts over Spain’s chances at the tournament.

Cole made the comments on The Dressing Room Podcast, where he analysed the balance and depth of several leading European sides.

The World Cup best midfield reflects his view that Portugal’s midfield options give them a major advantage going into the competition.

He argued that Spain could struggle if key players are unavailable, suggesting that Luis de la Fuente’s side may fall short at the tournament.

“I think this Spain team will limp out,” Cole said, adding that injuries to key players like Lamine Yamal could significantly weaken their chances.

Cole, however, praised Portugal’s midfield strength, highlighting several key players in their squad.

He pointed to Bruno Fernandes, João Neves, Vitinha and Nuno Mendes as part of a balanced and technically strong core.

He also referenced Cristiano Ronaldo as part of the wider squad experience and leadership structure.

According to Cole, Portugal’s midfield depth and tactical balance make them one of the strongest contenders in the tournament.
