Kaduna vocational training institute aims to empower 32,000 youths annually with practical skills for jobs and entrepreneurship

Kaduna vocational training institute is set to produce over 32,000 skilled graduates annually, marking a significant stride in youth empowerment, job creation, and economic development in Nigeria.

Unveiled by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in June, the Kaduna Institute of Vocational Training and Skills Development now operates from three campuses — Rigachikun, Soba, and Samaru Kataf — each equipped with modern facilities to offer globally competitive, hands-on training.

Accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), the institute offers training in 14 trade areas, including solar installation, mechatronics, masonry, catering, welding, plumbing, ICT hardware repair, and fashion design, all aligned with the Nigeria Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF).

Each programme devotes 80 percent of instruction to practical learning in real workplace and workshop settings.

Course durations range from three months for unit certificates to twelve months for full NSQ qualifications (Levels 2–4), with year-round enrollment and flexible morning and afternoon sessions.

Commissioner for Information, Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, hailed the initiative as a transformational programme, tailored to Nigeria’s construction, energy, ICT, and creative industries.

“This is not just training — it’s a pipeline for Kaduna’s economic future. We’re creating job-ready graduates and future entrepreneurs,” Maiyaki said.

The institute also places emphasis on inclusivity, targeting women, persons with disabilities, and vulnerable groups such as the Almajirai.

With a blend of industry veterans, retired professionals, and certified instructors, the learning experience combines theory with decades of field expertise.

Malam Husaini Haruna Muhammad, the Provost, noted that the programme equips students with skills “that are not just in demand in Nigeria, but globally competitive.”

The pioneer cohort of 2,000 learners is currently in session, with plans to scale up to 16,000 graduates in the first phase and ultimately reach the 32,000 annual target.

The Kaduna vocational training institute is part of the Federal Government’s broader TVET strategy aimed at reducing unemployment and stimulating inclusive growth through skill-based education.
