Kaffy childhood struggles: The dancer shares how her family fell from wealth to hunger, surviving on garri for months after her father left for menial jobs abroad

Kaffy childhood struggles are making headlines after the award-winning dancer opened up about her family’s dramatic fall from wealth to poverty, sharing painful but powerful memories that shaped her outlook on life.

Speaking on The Honest Bunch Podcast on Saturday, Kafayat Shafau, known professionally as Kaffy, revealed that she grew up in affluence—until it all came crashing down.

The choreographer described her early childhood in Lagos as elite and lavish.

Her parents, Alhaji Shafau and Alhaja Alake Lakonko, were popular socialites in the early 90s.

Their home frequently hosted Nigerian music legends such as King Sunny Ade, Sikiru Ayinde Barrister, and Ebenezer Obey.

“My parents were in the league of MKO Abiola. They were the first people to spray dollars at parties,” Kaffy said.

But that luxurious life ended abruptly when her father relocated abroad for menial work, including cleaning floors, leaving her mother and siblings to struggle back home.

Kaffy recalled how food became scarce—so scarce that she survived on garri and water for seven straight months.

“Hunger is a mentor… I drank garri for seven months without a break. There was no kwashiorkor,” she said.

Her vivid account highlighted how extreme hardship became part of her formative years, instilling in her a sense of resilience and self-determination.

The dancer also revealed the emotional toll the hardship took on her family, especially her mother.

She recounted episodes of psychotic breaks, during which her mother would emotionally project her frustrations onto the children.

“My mother would put us in the centre of the house and say, ‘You’re the reason I’m not anywhere in life. Your destiny should start providing for me,’” Kaffy painfully recalled.

Despite the harrowing experience, Kaffy has transformed her past into a source of strength. Today, she stands as one of Nigeria’s most celebrated dancers, proving that resilience can be born from hardship.
