The Federal Government approves ₦1 trillion Kano Metropolitan Rail Service to enhance urban transport, reduce traffic, and stimulate economic growth

The Federal Government has approved the construction of a ₦1 trillion Metropolitan Rail Service for Kano State, aimed at modernising urban transportation, boosting economic activity, and easing traffic congestion in the state capital, Governor Abba Yusuf has announced.

The governor made the disclosure while addressing members of the Kano State contingent who participated in the 2025 National Qur’anic Recitation Competition in Borno State.

The announcement was contained in a statement released by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

“The Federal Government has approved the construction of a ₦1 trillion Metropolitan Rail Service for Kano State in a major move aimed at transforming urban transportation,” the statement read.

Governor Yusuf explained that the rail service would provide a modern, efficient, and affordable mass transit system linking major districts across the Kano metropolis, enhancing mobility and stimulating trade and investment.

“The Kano Metropolitan Rail Service will transform public transportation in the state by providing a reliable, safe, and affordable means of movement for residents across the metropolis,” he said.

He added that his administration’s decision to realign politically with the Federal Government under the All Progressives Congress was guided by the need to attract significant infrastructure projects to Kano State.

“Our decision to work closely with the Federal Government is guided by the interest of the Kano people and the urgent need to attract critical infrastructure that will drive development and economic growth,” Yusuf stated.

Describing the rail service as a landmark intervention, the governor said it would improve residents’ quality of life and reposition Kano as a key transportation hub in Northern Nigeria.

He assured that the state government would collaborate with relevant federal agencies to ensure smooth implementation, transparency, and maximum benefits for residents.

Governor Yusuf concluded by expressing gratitude to the Federal Government for approving the project and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to complement federal initiatives through supportive policies and infrastructure development.
