Katsina police officer killed during anti-cattle rustling operation, three suspected rustlers neutralised in Magaji town

Divisional Police Officer, CSP Muhammad Sani Kabir, has been killed during an anti-cattle rustling operation in Rimi Local Government Area, Katsina State, authorities confirmed on Friday. The operation also left three suspected rustlers dead.

The Katsina State Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs described the officer’s death as a painful loss in the ongoing fight against banditry and cattle rustling.

The Ministry said the operation, which involved security operatives and local residents, successfully neutralised three suspected rustlers.

Sources in Rimi revealed that community leaders, including the ward councillor, APC members, the Village Head of Karare, and the District Head of Rimi, alerted authorities late at night about suspected rustlers in Magaji town under Maje-Gobir Ward. CSP Kabir mobilised his team and moved to confront the suspects.

Residents of Magajen Gobir organised to resist the intrusion, leading to a confrontation that extended into the early hours of the morning, coinciding with Subh prayers. During the clash, security forces recovered a significant number of stolen cattle.

The rustlers reportedly retreated towards Charanchi Local Government Area, passing through Kuraye town to Yanunko village, triggering a further exchange of gunfire. Two men and several young girls were reportedly shot during the initial attack in Magaji town.

Security operatives, supported by vigilantes, re-engaged the suspects. CSP Kabir, who personally led the operation, was fatally shot after his service rifle malfunctioned.

The suspected gang leader, identified as Maigemu, who had rejected previous peace accords, was among those neutralised. Three other security personnel injured in the operation are receiving treatment at Katsina Teaching Hospital.

The remains of CSP Kabir were conveyed for medical examination before being released to his family in Zaria, Kaduna State, for burial.

State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr Nasir Mu’azu, mourned the officer, describing his sacrifice as unforgettable.
