The Kogi State Police Command has restored calm in Abugi and surrounding communities after five people were killed in a reported reprisal attack, while security personnel remain deployed to prevent further violence and investigators work to identify those responsible.

The Command confirmed the development on Sunday, August 9, 2026, through its spokesperson, ASP Salisu Afusat, who said police and community stakeholders had taken measures to ease tensions following the killings.

The violence followed the killing of a herder in the community on Thursday, which subsequently triggered what police described as a reprisal attack.

The incident left at least five people dead and heightened concerns over the possibility of further retaliatory violence in Abugi and neighbouring communities.

Following the killings, the Area Command in Lokoja began engagements with traditional rulers, community leaders and other relevant stakeholders in an effort to restore peaceful relations and address the tensions underlying the conflict.

Afusat said the discussions focused on reconciliation, peaceful coexistence and preventing the incident from developing into a wider cycle of retaliation.

The police have also commenced a full-scale investigation through the State Criminal Investigation Department.

According to Afusat, investigators are working to identify, trace and arrest people suspected of participating in or contributing to the killings.

“The investigation will be pursued diligently, and any suspect found culpable will be brought before the law to face the appropriate legal consequences,” she said.

Security personnel have meanwhile been strategically deployed across the affected communities to protect residents and prevent another outbreak of violence.

The deployment is intended to provide reassurance while investigators continue their work and community leaders pursue reconciliation efforts.

Afusat said the combined security and community interventions had restored normalcy to Abugi and its environs, although monitoring would continue to ensure the fragile calm is maintained.

“The restoration of calm, however, does not in any way halt the ongoing investigation, as the Command remains committed to ensuring that those responsible for the loss of lives are identified and brought to justice,” she added.

The latest violence comes against the backdrop of recurring tensions involving farming and herding communities in parts of Nigeria, where disputes over land, access to resources and alleged criminal activity have sometimes escalated into deadly clashes.

Such incidents can become particularly difficult to contain when an initial killing triggers retaliatory attacks, increasing the risk of further casualties and displacement.

The police intervention in Abugi is therefore focused not only on arrests but also on preventing another cycle of reprisal violence.

Engagement with traditional rulers and community representatives is expected to provide a channel for resolving tensions while security personnel maintain a visible presence.

The Commissioner of Police in Kogi State reiterated the Command’s commitment to protecting residents and their property, urging members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding.

He also appealed to residents to report suspicious movements and activities promptly to the police and other security agencies.

For residents of Abugi and neighbouring communities, the immediate priority remains preserving the calm that has followed the intervention.
