Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway partially closed for four weeks from Feb 11 for rehabilitation. Phased traffic diversion to minimise disruption announced

The Lagos State Government has announced a partial closure of the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway for rehabilitation works spanning four weeks.

The closure, scheduled to start Wednesday, February 11, will enable the Federal Ministry of Works to carry out road repairs on critical sections of the expressway.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed the plan in a statement shared on X, noting that the rehabilitation will cover the stretch from the U-Turn Bus Stop to Sango Tollgate, affecting both inbound and outbound lanes.

To reduce traffic disruption, the project will be executed in two phases:

Phase One (Feb. 11 – Mar. 4, 2026): Affects Abeokuta-bound traffic. Vehicles from Lagos/Abule-Egba to Sango Tollgate will be diverted to one half of the carriageway, about 20 metres from the active work zone.

Work will progress on one lane at a time, allowing traffic to resume on rehabilitated sections while construction continues on the other half. Lagos-bound traffic will remain free-flowing during this phase.

Phase Two (Mar. 4 – Mar. 11, 2026): Focuses on Lagos-bound traffic between Obadeyi Bus Stop and Ekoro Junction.

Vehicles traveling from Sango Tollgate to Lagos/Abule-Egba will be diverted similarly, with traffic restored to completed sections as work progresses. Abeokuta-bound traffic will continue to flow uninterrupted.

Osiyemi assured road users that adequate traffic management measures would be in place throughout the rehabilitation period to ensure safety and minimise delays.

Motorists are advised to plan journeys accordingly and exercise caution while navigating diverted lanes during the construction works.
