Lagos health insurance warning escalates as the state moves to curb drug denial reports and strengthen oversight across health facilities

Officials have issued a Lagos Health Insurance Warning after the state government cautioned health facilities over reports that insured patients are being denied essential medications.

The directive was delivered during a sensitisation campaign and town hall meeting in Badagry on Tuesday, where the Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency emphasised the need for stronger accountability across hospitals.

HEFAMAA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Abiola Idowu, represented by Dr Olorunfemi Olonire, confirmed that residents complained of visiting pharmacies only to be told that prescribed drugs were unavailable.

She described the recurring reports as deeply troubling and said they undermine patient safety and the credibility of the insurance system.

Idowu explained that all complaints have been documented and will be escalated to LASHMA for urgent intervention. She added that a newly introduced QR code system now allows patients to report incidents instantly, with submissions forwarded to relevant authorities for quick action.

The warning comes amid concerns over unlicensed practitioners who carry out medical procedures in residential settings. Idowu noted that such practices often lead to dangerous complications later blamed on legitimate hospitals.

HEFAMAA’s Nursing Unit Director, Mrs Oluwole Titilope, said the QR code system will help reinforce standards by ensuring that only registered and inspected facilities continue to operate.

She stressed that certification marks only the beginning of an ongoing monitoring process designed to uphold safe and consistent care.

Residents were urged to patronise only accredited centres and to report irregularities immediately.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to guaranteeing that all insured patients receive their entitled medications and that public health standards remain uncompromised across Lagos State.
