Lagos illegal parking extortion warning as LASPA moves to stop fraudsters collecting unauthorized fees in Computer Village, Ikeja

The Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA) has issued a firm warning against illegal parking fee collection in the Computer Village and Ikeja Under-Bridge areas, vowing to prosecute individuals and groups involved in extortion of motorists.

The agency disclosed that it has uncovered a network of fraudulent operators allegedly working alongside touts to impose unauthorised parking charges on unsuspecting motorists in one of Lagos’ busiest commercial districts.

In a statement issued by General Manager Adebisi Adelabu, LASPA said some motorists are being charged as much as ₦1,000 for parking by illegal actors operating within the area, adding that victims often suffer additional penalties when official enforcement teams arrive.

According to the authority, such situations result in double financial losses for motorists, who may still face fines, plate number removal or vehicle towing despite having already paid illegal fees.

Adelabu stressed that LASPA remains the only legally recognised body responsible for parking regulation and enforcement in Lagos State, warning that no private group or alternative agency is authorised to collect parking charges.

“We are aware of these fraudulent activities, and we want to make it clear that LASPA is the only government body legally mandated to oversee parking in Lagos State,” she said.

She described the development as unacceptable, noting that it undermines efforts by the state government to establish an orderly and efficient parking system across Lagos.

LASPA added that it has intensified surveillance and enforcement operations in Computer Village and other parts of the state, with offenders to be arrested and prosecuted.

Motorists were advised to patronise only authorised officials who carry valid identification and issue official receipts, while members of the public were encouraged to report suspicious activity through designated channels.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to restoring order in parking management and eliminating illegal extortion across Lagos.
