LAWMA supports injured sweepers and families of deceased with welfare cheques as part of its commitment to worker dignity and safety across Lagos

The Lagos Waste Management Authority has reaffirmed its commitment to worker welfare as LAWMA supports injured sweepers and families of those who lost their lives on duty with financial assistance.

The cheques were presented to affected personnel and bereaved relatives as part of a structured welfare initiative designed to protect and support frontline sanitation workers.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, described the gesture as a demonstration of the agency’s moral and institutional responsibility to protect those who work tirelessly to keep Lagos clean.

“Our sanitation workers go to great lengths, often under very risky conditions, to maintain environmental sanity across the state,” he said.

“As a responsible organisation, we have a duty to stand by them, especially when accidents or unfortunate incidents occur while on duty. This gesture is our way of saying: we see you, we value you, and we will always stand by you.”

Gbadegesin explained that the financial support forms part of a broader benefits package that includes insurance coverage, accident compensation, routine medical checks, and regular safety training.

He noted that the initiative aligns with LAWMA’s overarching commitment to human dignity, equity, and inclusive governance, adding, “No sanitation worker should be left to suffer in silence or neglect due to work-related hazards.”

“As we work tirelessly to improve the city’s waste management systems, we are equally investing in the people who power that system. Their well-being remains central to our mission.”

He further advised sanitation workers to prioritise safety, especially when operating in high-traffic areas or during night shifts, and assured that LAWMA would continue to enhance safety standards to reduce occupational risks.

The cheque presentation is one of several ongoing initiatives by the Authority to institutionalise a sustainable and dignified working environment for sanitation workers across Lagos State.
