Leicester City docked six points for financial breaches, leaving them at risk of relegation from the Championship despite promotion last season

Leicester City face a growing threat of relegation to English football’s third tier after being docked six points for breaches of financial rules on Thursday, February 5, 2026.

The deduction, applied by an Independent Commission, drops the Foxes from 17th to 20th in the Championship, leaving them above the drop zone only on goal difference.

The commission found that Leicester had breached the Premier League’s profit and sustainability thresholds over the three-year period ending June 2024, by nearly £21 million.

During the three seasons from 2021/22 to 2023/24, the club reported losses exceeding £200 million.

The case originated under the English Football League, as Leicester were competing in the Championship during the relevant period.

It was later referred to the Premier League after the club secured promotion.

Leicester City issued a statement expressing disappointment with the outcome.

“It is with disappointment that Leicester City acknowledges the Independent Commission’s decision and the Club will use the time available to consider its next steps,” the club said.

The statement noted that the commission had reduced the “unprecedented scale of the sanction originally sought by the Premier League,” but argued that the recommendation “remains disproportionate” given mitigating factors.

Leicester welcomed certain elements of the ruling, highlighting that the commission agreed compliance for FY24 should be assessed over a 36-month period and acknowledged there were no aggravating factors in the sanction. The club also noted a positive financial trend in FY24.

“We are now reviewing the decision in full and considering the options available to us. We remain committed to engaging constructively and ensuring that any action is fair, proportionate and determined through the appropriate processes,” the statement concluded.

The points deduction adds pressure on Leicester to avoid relegation from the Championship just a year after their promotion, raising questions over the club’s financial management and long-term sporting ambitions.
