Liverpool manager Arne Slot said his side can still achieve “special things” this season ahead of Thursday’s Liverpool Arsenal clash in London.

The Premier League champions travel to the Emirates Stadium on Thursday, January 2026, sitting fourth and 14 points behind leaders Arsenal.

Liverpool’s title defence has faltered after nine defeats in 12 games across all competitions earlier this season.

However, the Merseyside club are now unbeaten in nine matches, although four of those games ended in draws.

Recent stalemates include a goalless draw against Leeds United and a 2-2 draw with Fulham in their opening league matches of 2026.

“It is nine games unbeaten but we have definitely had two draws too many,” Slot said on Wednesday.

The Dutch coach, who replaced Jurgen Klopp and won the title in his debut season, admitted Liverpool remain short of expectations.

“We are not where we want to be, but I feel we have a very talented squad,” Slot said.

He added that full fitness across the team could unlock a powerful run of results.

“If everyone is available and ready, then I think we can do special things,” he said.

Liverpool have already beaten Arsenal this season, securing a 1-0 win at Anfield in August.

Slot said that result reflected the team’s potential but also highlighted its inconsistency.

“We have had impressive wins, but also unimpressive draws and losses,” he said.

Liverpool recorded statement victories against Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, and Eintracht Frankfurt in Europe.

Yet heavy home defeats to Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest, and PSV Eindhoven exposed defensive fragility.
