Manchester City suffered a shock defeat at home as Guardiola’s squad rotation gamble backfired, with the club losing 2-0 to Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League on Tuesday.

The result marked City’s first home loss in the competition before the knockout stage since 2018.

Guardiola rested key stars including Erling Haaland, Ruben Dias, Bernardo Silva, and Gianluigi Donnarumma. Leverkusen capitalised on City’s weakened line-up as Alex Grimaldo opened the scoring in the first half before Patrik Schick doubled the advantage after the break, leaving City fans frustrated.

The loss came just days after a 2-1 defeat at Newcastle in the Premier League, with City already trailing leaders Arsenal by seven points.

While the Champions League setback may not end their hopes of reaching the last 16, it underlined the limitations of Guardiola’s reserve squad.

In his 100th Champions League match as City manager, Guardiola’s side displayed uncharacteristic frailties. Nathan Ake’s early effort forced a fine save from Mark Flekken, but sloppy defending allowed Grimaldo to score from 12 yards in the 23rd minute.

City’s response lacked urgency, with Omar Marmoush and Tijjani Reijnders failing to convert key chances.

Guardiola introduced Jeremy Doku, Phil Foden, and Nico O’Reilly at half-time. O’Reilly tested Flekken with a long-range strike, but defensive lapses allowed Schick to head in the second goal in the 54th minute.

Haaland’s introduction late in the game failed to turn the tide, as he missed several opportunities to reduce the deficit.

City’s manager admitted he felt “embarrassed and ashamed” following recent setbacks, and Tuesday’s result will reinforce the need for his first-choice players in crucial matches.
