Manchester United Thomas Tuchel reports suggest the England coach is the club’s preferred candidate to replace Michael Carrick permanently

Manchester United have reportedly identified Thomas Tuchel as their preferred candidate to replace interim manager Michael Carrick on a permanent basis.

Carrick was appointed until the end of the season following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim.

Since taking charge, the former United midfielder has impressed, winning four consecutive matches before his side were held to a 1-1 draw by West Ham United on Tuesday.

Despite Carrick’s positive start, Manchester United are not rushing into a decision and do not currently view him as the leading option for the job ahead of the summer.

A number of high-profile managers have been linked with the Old Trafford vacancy, including Carlo Ancelotti, Luis Enrique, Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino, Roberto De Zerbi and Oliver Glasner.

However, according to reports from the Manchester Evening News, Tuchel is emerging as the preferred choice among United’s hierarchy.

The German tactician is currently serving as England’s head coach and is expected to become available in July after the 2026 World Cup, when his contract with the national team expires.
