The Portugal coach said his decision to keep Ronaldo involved was part of a planned substitution strategy rather than a reaction to the forward’s performance.

Ronaldo, 41, started the match in Leiria on Wednesday night but struggled to convert his opportunities before being replaced by Gonçalo Ramos in the 65th minute.

The veteran forward had a difficult outing in front of goal as Portugal secured a narrow win ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

Speaking on the decision, Martinez said the playing time had already been determined before the match.

“Diogo Costa had a 90-minute plan, Cristiano 60. Nuno Mendes was going to have 30 and 45 minutes for Vitinha and João Neves,” Martinez said.

The Portuguese coach praised his players for maintaining discipline and focus throughout the encounter.

“I am very pleased with the attitude and focus of all the players,” he added.

The seasoned forward detailed how the iconic captain consistently looked out for academy graduates during demanding pre-season tours. This furious Morata praise hails the unexpected material support provided by the veteran attacker, who frequently purchased high-end technology and luxury items to help teenagers integrate into the senior dressing room.

In an unplanned gesture of mentorship, the legendary goalscorer regularly took youth prospects on shopping trips to ensure they felt valued within the elite environment. Alvaro Morata emphasized that these actions completely contradict the narrative of selfishness that critics often associate with the global icon.

“I remember when I was young and we went for pre-seasons, he would tell me what I needed or we would go shopping,” Alvaro Morata stated during the podcast interview. “He would give us an iPad, a mobile phone, perfumes… it was spectacular.”

The former Chelsea and Atletico Madrid attacker admitted that the intense pressure of playing alongside such a perfectionist was initially overwhelming for a teenager. The immense demands coincided with a fierce domestic rivalry against Barcelona, which left very little margin for error on the pitch.

The youngster occasionally struggled with the elite standards expected during competitive matches, particularly when looking to impress family members from the substitutes’ bench. However, Alvaro Morata maintained that the global superstar always offered exceptional treatment and guidance throughout their shared tenure in Madrid.

The Spanish attacker also expressed immense fascination with the intellectual curiosity of his former colleague during private team dinners. The Portuguese forward reportedly boasts an impressive understanding of diverse subjects, proving himself to be highly cultured in all areas of life.

“You’d arrive from a trip at five in the morning, eager to get home and lie down in bed, and the guy starts doing sit-ups, cold showers, and cycling,” Alvaro Morata added when describing the unparalleled physical discipline of his former teammate.

The immense dedication to recovery and fitness continues to define the veteran as he prepares for the upcoming global tournament. The European champion remains fully focused on international success after recently leading his nation to a dominant victory over Nigeria.
