Nasarawa Baby Abandonment Case has sent shockwaves through the Akwanga community, following the discovery of a newborn abandoned in a bush near a primary school on AA Koto Street on Wednesday.

The baby, wrapped in cloth and found alive, was rescued by concerned residents who immediately alerted the police.

Authorities have since arrested the child’s mother, a final-year student at the College of Education, Akwanga, for allegedly abandoning the infant.

Confirming the development in Lafia on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, stated that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for thorough investigation and potential prosecution.

“The mother of the baby has been identified and arrested. The Commissioner of Police has ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Lafia,” Nansel said.

The Nasarawa Baby Abandonment Case has ignited anger and sadness among locals, many of whom expressed disbelief over the incident.

This disturbing case adds to a string of similar incidents across Nigeria. In July, a newborn girl buried alive on a farm in Kamba, Kebbi State, was discovered by a farmer, Kabiru Kamba, and later adopted by him and his wife.

Such cases have raised national concern over the growing trend of child abandonment, prompting renewed calls for better access to mental health support, reproductive education, and crisis intervention services for young and vulnerable women.
