Newcastle United cancels 103 season tickets after discovering a resale scandal tied to decade-old tour organiser deals. Club apologises and returns seats to fans

Newcastle United season tickets have come under scrutiny after the club announced the termination of 103 tickets due to unauthorised resale by tour organisers, dating back nearly a decade.

The club issued a public apology on Tuesday following the discovery that tickets originally sold to school tour organisers in the 2015–16 season were still being used and resold, despite no active contract being in place.

An internal investigation uncovered the issue when it emerged that a school located almost 200 miles away — the High School of Dundee — had secured 45 tickets for Thursday’s Champions League clash with Barcelona.

The match attracted over 110,000 fans to the online queue, with demand far outstripping availability.

The club revealed that the season tickets were initially provided under a now-defunct agreement “for the benefit of school groups.”

However, after the club’s ownership changed four years ago, all third-party ticketing agreements were formally ended — yet these particular tickets remained active and in circulation.

“At a time when we are doing our utmost to protect legitimate access for Newcastle United fans, we want to be fully transparent and apologise for this oversight,” the club said in a statement.

The school, which had acquired the tickets in good faith through a provider, saw them cancelled by the club as part of immediate corrective action.

According to Newcastle United, the resale of the tickets at higher package prices went undetected for years due to the absence of a formal contract with the organisers.

“The club have not received any funds above the face value price of these season tickets and have immediately returned the seats for sale to supporters who have entered the official ballot for upcoming fixtures,” the statement read.

The club stressed that this incident was unrelated to individual fans attempting to re-sell tickets.

The Newcastle United Supporters’ Trust (NUST) has backed the club’s decision, previously calling for tougher action on ticket profiteering and unauthorised sales.

“Along with the rise in ticket prices, one of the biggest concerns for Newcastle fans is reduced ticket availability due to third-party sites or other unauthorised means,” the Trust noted.

The termination of these 103 Newcastle United season tickets comes amid growing concern among fans about ticket access, particularly for high-profile European fixtures.

The club says it will continue to audit ticketing channels and reaffirmed its commitment to fair access for genuine supporters.
