NFF apology expresses deep regret as the federation admits failure after the Super Eagles miss the 2026 World Cup and promises a decisive rebuild

NFF apology has taken centre stage after the Nigeria Football Federation openly expressed deep regret to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Federal Government, and millions of passionate fans following the Super Eagles’ painful failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The federation described Sunday’s defeat to DR Congo in Rabat as a crushing setback that cut to the heart of a nation that treats football as a shared identity and a source of collective pride.

It admitted that missing the World Cup for the second time in a row carries a level of disappointment that is both emotional and historic.

In its emotionally charged statement, the NFF said it fully understood the expectations of Nigerians and acknowledged that its collective effort did not deliver the outcome the people deserved.

Officials noted that the atmosphere in the dressing room after the final whistle was sombre, with several players visibly overwhelmed and unable to speak.

The federation emphasised that it had received consistent support from the Federal Government, the National Assembly, key ministries, diplomatic missions, the media, and millions of loyal fans throughout the qualification campaign. It described Nigerian football supporters as unmatched in passion anywhere in the world.

The NFF stressed that football remains a national language that unites more than 200 million people and vowed to honour that powerful bond through sincerity and accountability.

The NFF Apology marks what the federation called a critical turning point as it prepares for the Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025, which it believes offers a chance for healing and renewal.

According to the statement, the NFF Board and Management will now launch a rigorous and strategic review to examine technical, administrative, and structural lapses that contributed to the setback.

The federation pledged decisive action to rebuild trust, restore pride, and strengthen Nigeria’s standing on the global stage.

Reaffirming its commitment, the federation said the Super Eagles would rise again, insisting that this setback will not define Nigerian football.
