Super Eagles earn praise from President Tinubu despite losing to DR Congo in World Cup playoff, urging focus on Africa Cup of Nations

Super Eagles have earned high praise from President Bola Tinubu despite a heartbreaking defeat to DR Congo in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers on Sunday.

The Super Eagles’ dream of reaching the World Cup suffered a major setback at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, Morocco, after a tense penalty shootout saw DR Congo advance to the intercontinental playoff.

Nigeria initially took the lead through Frank Onyeka in the third minute, only for DR Congo to equalise in the 32nd minute via M. Elia.

The match extended into extra time, with both sides creating chances, including a missed header by Tolu Arokodare and a crucial save from Nigeria’s goalkeeper Nwabali, but neither team could break the deadlock.

The decisive penalty shootout saw Nigeria’s Calvin Bassey and Moses Simon miss early, while Nwabali denied DR Congo’s opening attempt.

DR Congo eventually triumphed 4–3 on penalties, ending Nigeria’s World Cup hopes for a second consecutive tournament.

In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu commended the Super Eagles for their resilience and dedication despite the disappointing result.

“Notwithstanding the unfortunate loss, we must commend the players for their efforts and continue to support them,” Tinubu said.

He urged football stakeholders to critically assess the team’s performance, noting that lessons learned should inform preparations for the next tournaments.

The President stressed the importance of shifting focus to the African Cup of Nations scheduled for January to February 2026 in Morocco.

“Now is the time to focus all efforts on the Cup of Nations. Our Super Eagles must recover the lost glory,” he added.

Tinubu concluded by calling on fans across the nation to continue backing the team, highlighting the commitment and determination shown by the Super Eagles in both the match and the high-pressure penalty shootout.
