Nigeria Football Federation says no discussions have started on Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle’s contract after AFCON 2025 third-place finish

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed there are no discussions regarding the extension or termination of Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle’s contract, following Nigeria’s third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Chelle, a Franco-Malian, was appointed in January 2025 on a two-year deal.

Despite Nigeria missing the 2026 FIFA World Cup intercontinental play-off, Chelle led the team to an unbeaten AFCON campaign, scoring a record 14 goals, the highest in Nigeria’s tournament history.

“The NFF is proud of the team’s performance and will continue to support and motivate the squad,” NFF President Ibrahim Gusau said. “Mr Chelle has done exceedingly well within the one year he has been with us.”

Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi also urged continuity, describing Chelle as a “wonderful manager” and stressing the importance of stability ahead of future competitions.

In his first year, Chelle oversaw 15 competitive matches, winning 10 and drawing five.

While some Nigerians have expressed doubts after the semi-final loss to Morocco and a key World Cup qualifying defeat to DR Congo, Chelle continues to enjoy backing from the NFF, his players, and interest from other African nations including Tunisia, Guinea, Angola, and Mali.

The Super Eagles will now focus on the 2027 AFCON qualifiers and other international engagements, with Chelle expected to remain at the helm for the foreseeable future.
