Police launch manhunt after Ngige convoy attack in Anambra, where gunmen shot a policeman and civilians

The convoy of former Anambra State Governor Chris Ngige came under heavy gunfire on Thursday along the Nkpor–Nnobi Road, prompting an intensive police manhunt across the state.

Chris Ngige was not in the convoy at the time of the Ngige convoy attack, according to his former media aide, Sir Fred Chukwuelobe.

The assailants, who eyewitnesses said wore police and army uniforms, opened fire on the pilot vehicle, injuring a police officer and stripping him of his gun and uniform. Witnesses reported that a young woman filming the attack was shot, while a nearby shop owner who rushed out to observe the commotion suffered multiple gunshot wounds but is expected to recover after surgery.

Eyewitness accounts described the scene as chaotic, noting that the pilot car was riddled with bullets but that no officer was killed. The injured escort leader and the wounded shop owner were said to be in stable condition after treatment.

Spokesman for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident and announced that a coordinated, state-wide pursuit of the attackers had begun.

Ikenga disclosed that a white Mercedes-Benz SUV earlier snatched by the gunmen was recovered after a combined tactical response involving operatives from Awka, Akwuzu and Enugu-Ukwu.

Ikenga said the criminals abandoned the stolen vehicle during a gun battle after encountering a police convoy, later confirmed to be attached to Ngige. He added that one officer suffered a minor gunshot injury and was receiving treatment.

The recovered SUV has been secured for forensic analysis as police intensify efforts to apprehend the fleeing gunmen. The command urged residents to remain calm, assuring them that operatives were working around the clock to restore safety along the affected corridor.
