Ade Ti De NGO combats Nigerians eye care challenges with free screenings, eyeglasses, and surgery sponsorships for 1,000 residents in Ogun State

Nigerians eye care challenges are growing, with over 23 million people currently living with sight-related issues, a new report by Ade Ti De Development Initiative reveals.

The NGO’s founder, Adedayo Adelanwa, disclosed this during a two-day free eye care outreach in Abeokuta, Ogun State, where 1,000 residents received free eye tests, consultations, eyeglasses, and medications.

Adelanwa described the figure as alarming and identified common vision problems affecting Nigerians, including refractive errors, cataracts, and glaucoma.

Many affected individuals cannot afford quality treatment due to financial constraints, inspiring the NGO’s intervention as a way to complement government efforts and give back to the community.

Dr Richard Ojeme, lead optometrist at the outreach from St Richardson Eye Consult, highlighted that refractive errors and glaucoma account for 77.9 per cent of mild visual impairments in Nigeria.

He praised the initiative for aligning with the World Health Organisation’s goal to eradicate avoidable blindness by 2040.

By Sunday, the outreach had screened over 600 patients, distributed 500 pairs of eyeglasses, and dispensed medications.

The NGO also pledged to fund surgeries for 50 patients with severe eye conditions.

Ojeme commended the humanitarian effort and urged more individuals and organisations to join in tackling Nigeria’s public health challenges.

One beneficiary, Adebayo Adedeji, expressed gratitude, calling the programme timely and life-changing.

He urged wealthy individuals and groups to invest in similar causes, emphasising that true wealth uplifts the less privileged.

The NGO plans to expand the outreach in December to include free screenings for hypertension, diabetes, and other non-communicable diseases, aiming to broaden its impact on community health.
