Niger child assault case: Police arrest 50-year-old suspect after alleged abuse of a 12-year-old boy, with investigation ongoing

The Nigeria Police Force in Niger State has arrested a 50-year-old meat seller, Usman Abubakar, over the alleged assault of a 12-year-old boy in Angwan-Daji community.

Police authorities said the Niger child assault case was reported after the victim’s mother noticed signs of distress when the boy returned home from purchasing meat.

According to a statement by the command’s spokesman, Wasiu Abiodun, the child was unable to sit comfortably and appeared to be in pain, prompting further questioning by his family.

The boy subsequently identified the suspect, who operates a shop within the neighbourhood, as the person responsible for the alleged act.

Police operatives attached to ‘A’ Division in Minna were said to have swiftly arrested the suspect following the report.

During interrogation, Abubakar allegedly confessed and explained how he lured the child to his shop, according to the police.

The victim is currently receiving medical attention, while the suspect remains in custody pending further investigation and prosecution.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Adamu Elleman, condemned the incident and assured the public that justice would be pursued.

Elleman also urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant and take proactive steps to safeguard children within their communities.

The police added that the Niger child assault case would be handled with urgency as part of efforts to protect vulnerable persons and strengthen public confidence in law enforcement.
