Nigeria Cycling Championships campaign shines as hosts win 16 medals at the African Para-Track and Track event in Abuja

Nigeria have secured a commanding total of 16 medals at the 2026 Confederation of African Cycling Para-Track and Track African Championships in Abuja.

The championship, held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium velodrome, attracted elite cyclists from across the continent, including competitors from Egypt, Kenya, South Africa and Algeria.

After two days of intense competition, Nigeria climbed to the top of the medals table with nine gold, five silver and two bronze medals, finishing ahead of several established African cycling nations.

Egypt occupy second position with 14 medals, while Kenya sit third with nine medals. South Africa and Algeria complete the top five standings.

The Nigeria Cycling Championships campaign has generated excitement among home supporters, with Nigerian riders delivering impressive performances in speed, endurance and technical execution throughout the tournament.

The event has also earned praise from participating teams and officials for the quality of facilities provided at the Abuja velodrome, which many described as a world-class venue capable of hosting major continental competitions.

Nigeria’s latest hosting success further strengthens the country’s growing reputation as a strategic hub for African cycling events, having previously staged the championships in 2021 and 2023.

This year’s edition featured more than 100 cyclists from eight countries competing for medals, continental honours and valuable ranking points.
