Nigeria Police tactical units clarification issued after reports claimed IGP ordered disbandment of units nationwide, calling it misrepresentation

The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed reports alleging that the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, ordered the immediate disbandment of tactical units across state commands, describing the claims as a misrepresentation of official directives.

The Nigeria Police tactical units clarification was issued on Sunday, 2026, by Force Public Relations Officer Anthony Placid, who stated that the circulating reports did not accurately reflect the Inspector-General’s position on ongoing operational structures within the Force.

According to the statement, while the Inspector-General of Police acknowledges public concerns surrounding the activities of some tactical teams, he also recognises their critical role in supporting national crime-fighting efforts and maintaining internal security.

The Force emphasised that at no point did the Inspector-General issue a blanket directive to dissolve multiple tactical units nationwide, urging media organisations to verify information before publication to avoid unnecessary public confusion.

The Nigeria Police tactical units clarification further noted that reforms and oversight within operational units remain ongoing, aimed at improving professionalism, accountability, and effectiveness in line with best policing standards.
