The Federal Government has begun coordinating voluntary evacuation flights for Nigerians in South Africa, with at least 130 citizens already registered for repatriation amid escalating anti-foreigner protests and growing security concerns.

The Nigeria South Africa evacuation xenophobic protests response was confirmed on Sunday by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, who said the exercise follows directives from President Bola Tinubu to prioritise the safety of Nigerian nationals abroad.

According to the minister, the evacuation arrangement is being coordinated through Nigerian diplomatic missions in South Africa, with registration ongoing for citizens seeking voluntary return flights.

Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu said the Nigerian mission in South Africa has already received 130 applications, noting that the number is expected to rise as more citizens express interest in returning home.

The minister also confirmed diplomatic engagement with South African authorities, including the summoning of the Acting High Commissioner, as tensions linked to anti-immigrant demonstrations continue to draw international attention.

She said protests in cities such as Pretoria and Johannesburg between 27 and 29 April were largely peaceful but still required heavy police deployment, amid fears of targeted violence against foreign nationals.

While no Nigerian deaths were recorded during the most recent demonstrations, the minister confirmed two separate fatalities involving Nigerians in earlier incidents allegedly linked to security personnel interactions.

The Nigerian government described both cases as deeply troubling, with calls for thorough investigations and accountability.

Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu further noted that Nigerian missions are maintaining close contact with South African authorities to ensure protection for citizens while preparations for evacuation continue.

She added that Nigeria remains committed to diplomatic engagement with South Africa, stressing the importance of upholding bilateral agreements and protecting foreign nationals under international law.

Security analysts say the situation highlights recurring tensions around xenophobic sentiment in parts of South Africa, particularly during politically sensitive periods.
