Nigeria’s Super Eagles may lose their status as Africa’s most successful World Cup team as Morocco, Senegal and Ghana close in

Nigeria’s Super Eagles are watching closely as the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, with concerns that their long-standing African record could be overtaken by rival nations at the tournament.

The competition, set to begin on June 11, 2026, will feature nine African teams competing in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, although Nigeria will not be among them after failing to qualify.

Despite their absence, the Super Eagles remain Africa’s most successful team in World Cup history in terms of victories, having recorded six wins since their debut in 1994.

Nigeria secured two wins in their first appearance in 1994 against Bulgaria and Greece, repeating the same feat in 1998 with victories over Spain and Bulgaria.

Additional wins followed in later tournaments, including a group-stage victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2014 and a 2–0 win against Iceland in 2018.

However, Nigeria has struggled in recent editions, failing to win a match in 2002, 2010, and missing out entirely on the 2006 and 2022 tournaments.

The record is now under threat as Morocco, Senegal, and Ghana each sit close behind Nigeria with five World Cup wins apiece.

Morocco’s strong performance at the 2022 World Cup, where they reached the semi-finals, has placed them in a strong position to potentially surpass Nigeria’s record in 2026.

Senegal will also aim to improve their tally, although they face a challenging group that includes France, Norway, and Iraq.

Ghana, meanwhile, will compete against England, Croatia, and Panama in what is expected to be a difficult campaign.

The record remains a key point of pride for the Super Eagles, but the upcoming tournament could reshape the continent’s football history depending on how African teams perform.
