Nigerian Air Force investigates alleged civilian casualties from airstrikes in Kurigi, Niger State, reaffirming commitment to protection of non-combatants

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has launched an immediate investigation into reported civilian casualties during airstrikes on 25 January in Kurigi village, Mariga Local Government Area, Niger State.

Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Director of Public Relations and Information for the NAF, confirmed in a statement on Wednesday that the Civilian Harm Accident and Investigation (CHAI) team has been activated to conduct a thorough probe into the incident.

Ejodame acknowledged the seriousness of the reported loss of lives and injuries, expressing the service’s deep concern for all affected.

He reiterated that the protection of non-combatants is central to NAF operations.

“Over the past year, the NAF has consistently applied its Civilian Harm Mitigation and Response – Action Plan (CHMR-AP), embedding civilian protection considerations into all phases of operations while strengthening training, procedures, and safeguards aimed at minimising harm,” Ejodame said.

The spokesperson emphasised that the NAF remains guided by principles of accountability, responsibility, and transparency, assuring that the service will take corrective action where necessary and continue to operate with professionalism and restraint.

“In line with this commitment, the NAF will implement necessary improvements and safeguard innocent lives while continuing to defend the nation with respect for the trust placed in it by the Nigerian people,” he added.

Further details of the investigation are expected to be released as the CHAI team concludes its work.
