Nigerian man jailed for cybercrime after impersonating a woman from the United States to defraud \$700 in a Facebook scam has been sentenced by the Federal High Court in Lagos.

Lawal Oluwadamilare Samuel pleaded guilty to the cybercrime charge before Justice D.I. Dipeolu on Tuesday, August 5, 2025.

Samuel falsely represented himself online as Sandra Brooks, a female from Virginia, USA, to trick a man named Keith in Illinois into sending him \$700.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested him in May 2025 at his hideout in Ipaja, Lagos, following intelligence on his fraudulent activities.

During the investigation, the EFCC seized his Samsung Galaxy S9, HP laptop, Samsung tablet, and a Mercedes Benz C300 (2008 model). He also returned 500,000 Naira to the victim via Zenith Bank.

Despite his remorse and first-time offender status, Justice Dipeolu sentenced Samuel to six months imprisonment, with an option to pay a fine of three million Naira.

The court ordered all confiscated items and the restituted money be forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
