Despite rising living costs, Nigerians spent N1.54tn on beer in nine months of 2025, using it as a coping mechanism for stress, unemployment, and daily pressures

Many Nigerians are turning to beer as a way to cope with the pressures of daily life, rising living costs, and shrinking incomes.

Across socio-economic backgrounds, individuals explained that consuming a few bottles of beer helps them relax, reflect, and strategize amid harsh economic realities.

Beer, produced through brewing and fermentation of cereals, is one of the most consumed beverages in Nigeria. It remains a staple at parties, social gatherings, and hangouts in bars and lounges, often paired with local delicacies like pepper soup, suya, grilled fish, Nkwobi, and Nsiewu.

N1.54tn Spent on Beer in Nine Months

Despite economic challenges, Nigerians spent a cumulative N1.54tn on beer and other alcoholic beverages in the first nine months of 2025.

This figure reflects the combined revenue of major breweries: Nigerian Breweries Plc (N1.05tn), International Breweries Plc (₦472.57bn), and Champion Breweries Plc (₦21.44bn).

Price increases in 2024 saw bottles of Gulder rise from ₦700 to ₦950, Star Lager and 33 Extra from ₦600 to ₦850, Heineken to ₦1,300, Life beer to ₦850, Legend to ₦1,250, and Tiger beer to ₦750.

Despite the hikes, consumers continue to find beer an affordable escape, often limiting themselves to three bottles per sitting.

Why Nigerians Drink Beer

For many, beer offers temporary relief from stress, unemployment, and family or business pressures. Corporate worker Sola Ajisafe explained that after a long day filled with responsibilities, a few bottles of beer help him reflect and plan for the coming days.

Unemployed graduate Adeyemi Quadri uses alcohol to cope with sadness and depression, while trader Ifeanyi Charles relies on it to relieve stress caused by slow business and family pressure.

Others, like Gbenga Ogunsanya and Alex Olalekan, view beer as a way to relax, socialize, and sleep better after a stressful day.

Changing Patterns

Economic realities have also altered drinking habits. Many now limit consumption to fewer bottles or substitute beer with cheaper sachet drinks known locally as fenuja.

High prices and the cost of living have reduced the frequency of visits to bars and social gatherings.

Despite the financial pressures, beer remains a key coping mechanism for many Nigerians, highlighting the intersection of lifestyle choices and socio-economic stress in the country.
