NLC and NSITF clash over Abuja land as both claim ownership of disputed plots. NLC insists documents are intact; NSITF maintains claim and missing status

A fresh land ownership controversy in Abuja has sparked a heated public dispute between the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF).

The disagreement centres around two plots of land—MISC 54707 and MISC 54824—over which both parties now claim ownership.

The matter escalated when NSITF declared through a public notice on July 10, 2025, that the documents relating to the plots were missing. It urged the public and government agencies not to recognise any individual in possession of them.

According to the notice signed by the Managing Director of NSITF, Oluwaseun Faleye, the documents in question include the Certificate of Occupancy, Power of Attorney, and Deed of Assignment.

But the NLC swiftly debunked the statement, calling it misleading and unfounded.

“We find this publication as mischievous or utterly ridiculous or hopefully, an act of sheer ignorance,” said NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero.

Ajaero affirmed that the NLC is in possession of the original documents and remains the rightful owner of the disputed land.

“It is trite knowledge that one cannot claim loss or issue loss notice over that which one has neither possessory nor proprietary right,” he added.

Despite the strong rebuttal, the NSITF doubled down on its claim. In a follow-up release signed by its Head of Corporate Affairs, Alexandra Mede, the Fund insisted that it remains the legitimate title holder.

“The Fund reaffirms its position as stated in its previous publication and maintains full confidence that the appropriate authorities will resolve the matter in accordance with the law,” the statement read.

The dispute now awaits possible legal intervention or clarification from authorities such as the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and the Abuja Geographical Information System (AGIS).
