Ethan Nwaneri, the 19-year-old Arsenal midfielder, has agreed to join Borussia Dortmund on a season-long loan after the two clubs reached a verbal agreement on Tuesday, with Dortmund set to cover the England youth international’s salary in full.

The agreement was reported by transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, who gave the move his trademark “here we go” confirmation after Nwaneri accepted Dortmund’s proposal overnight.

The deal represents a significant development for the highly rated Arsenal academy graduate, who has found regular first-team opportunities difficult to secure in north London.

Romano reported that the loan will run for the entire season and that Dortmund will assume responsibility for Nwaneri’s wages.

Other reports indicate that the agreement does not include a purchase option, meaning Arsenal will retain control of the midfielder’s long-term future.

For Nwaneri, the move offers an opportunity to gain consistent senior football at one of Germany’s most prominent clubs rather than spending another season competing for limited minutes at Arsenal.

The teenager has already experienced a loan spell abroad, spending the second half of the previous campaign with Marseille.

He made 11 appearances for the French club, scoring twice and providing one assist.
