Rep Victor Ogene condemns President Bola Tinubu and APC for forcing the Electoral Act on Nigerians, calling it a troubling moment for Nigeria’s democracy

Victor Ogene, a House of Representatives member representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency in Anambra State, has criticized President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing them of imposing a “fait accompli” on Nigerians regarding the Electoral Act. He spoke on ARISE Television’s Prime Time on Wednesday.

“I will start by saying congratulations to the President and APC for forcing a fait accompli on the Nigerian people. I say this with all due sense of responsibility,” Ogene stated.

The lawmaker highlighted that while Nigerians were aware the 2027 elections were approaching, the signing of the bill was timed to minimize opposition from civil society groups and the media. “Having been signed, that closes the door to any further agitation. In the last few weeks and days, we have been forced to accept the fait accompli,” he added.

Ogene described the development as a troubling moment for Nigeria’s democracy, noting its coincidence with a solemn religious period observed by both Christians and Muslims. “On this solemn day that Nigerians on both sides of the religious divide began their fast, it is a sad day for democracy, and we will remember it as such,” he said.
