The death of Owolabi Oniyiku has triggered protests in Ifonyintedo, with youth leaders demanding an independent investigation and checkpoint review

Tension has returned to Ifonyintedo in Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State after police officers allegedly shot and killed a young man, identified as Owolabi Oniyiku, at a checkpoint on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, prompting protests and calls for an independent investigation.

The reported Ogun checkpoint shooting occurred a day after a police checkpoint in the community was reportedly attacked and set ablaze, leading security operatives to establish a roadblock in the area the following day.

According to accounts from residents cited by local media, Oniyiku had returned to the community to celebrate the Oro festival with relatives and friends.

He was reportedly taking a friend on his motorcycle towards Ilashe Garage when the pair encountered the police roadblock around the Ifejido area.

A source told Daily Trust that Oniyiku stopped after seeing friends whose motorcycles had allegedly been seized by the officers. He reportedly began pleading for the release of one of the motorcycles before an argument broke out. (Daily Trust)

The source alleged that an officer subsequently fired a shot that struck Oniyiku in the chest, killing him at the scene.

An 18-second video showing what appeared to be Oniyiku’s lifeless body later circulated online, while youths could be heard accusing police officers in Idiroko of killing a resident. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain subject to investigation.

The incident subsequently triggered anger in the community, with youths reportedly protesting against the security operatives. Reports said a police station was also burnt and that the victim’s body was taken to the Idiroko Area Command as protesters demanded justice. (Daily Trust)

The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the incident and said the officers allegedly involved have been arrested.

Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the command had commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.

The development comes against the backdrop of heightened security concerns in the border community following the reported attack on the earlier checkpoint.

The sequence of events has added complexity to the case, with the police facing the task of establishing what happened at the roadblock while also responding to allegations of excessive use of force.

The National Youth Council of Nigeria, Ipokia chapter, has condemned the killing and called for an independent investigation.

In a statement signed by its Secretary, Babarinde Kofoworola, and Coordinator, Gbenasu Johnson, the group also demanded a review of police checkpoints across the area.

The youth leaders alleged that residents routinely face harassment, repeated stops and demands for money at checkpoints, although those allegations have not been independently established.

“A security checkpoint should provide security. It should not become a source of fear,” the group said.

The council called on the Inspector-General of Police, the Ogun State Commissioner of Police and the Idiroko Area Command to provide a clear account of the incident and identify all officers who were present.

The group gave the authorities seven days to respond to its demands and called for a meeting involving security officials and community leaders to help ease tensions.

The reported killing has also revived wider concerns about police-community relations and the conduct of security personnel at checkpoints, particularly in communities along Nigeria’s international borders.

For residents of Ifonyintedo, however, the immediate concern remains establishing how Oniyiku died and ensuring that any officer found responsible is held accountable.

The police investigation will be crucial in determining whether the shooting was justified under the circumstances or constituted unlawful use of lethal force.

The command’s decision to arrest the officers involved provides an important first step, but the demands for an independent and transparent investigation are likely to remain central as the community awaits answers.
