Ogun women empowerment grant sees N35 million disbursed to 550 women, supporting livelihoods and political engagement during International Women’s Day

The Ogun State Government has disbursed a total of 35 million naira in cash grants to 550 women across the state as part of an empowerment initiative aimed at strengthening livelihoods.

The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Adijat Adeleye, during the special celebration of this year’s International Women’s Day at the Ojude Oba Pavilion in Ijebu Ode.

Under the initiative, 50 women received 200,000 naira each, while another 500 beneficiaries received 50,000 naira each. Adeleye said the programme would positively impact the livelihoods of the state’s women, empowering them to pursue leadership and enterprise.

The event was attended by prominent figures, including the wife of the governor, Bamidele Abiodun; Deputy Governor, Noimot Salako-Oyedele; two former deputy governors; and the first female Speaker in the state, Titi Oseni.

During her address, Adeleye highlighted the historic significance of the 2026 celebration, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Ogun State, and praised the enduring contributions of women in governance, business, and public life.

She paid tribute to trailblazing women, including Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, Bola Kuforiji-Olubi, Iyalode Alaba Lawson, Chief Mrs Adenike Ebun Oyagbola, and Mrs Lucia Onabanjo, highlighting their legacy in paving the way for women’s leadership.

Adeleye said, “The 2026 International Women’s Day theme, ‘Give to Gain,’ underscores the enduring truth that meaningful progress is born from sacrifice, service, and intentional investment in one another.”

In a political highlight, the Deputy Governor, alongside other women at the event, endorsed the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and expressed support for Governor Dapo Abiodun’s aspiration to represent Ogun East Senatorial District in 2027 after completing his second term.

Salako-Oyedele encouraged women to participate actively in politics to increase female representation in governance and decision-making processes, emphasising that continued unity and empowerment are essential for sustaining progress.
